The climate and ecological crisis is the greatest global health threat of the 21st century. This three-part Climate and health course explores the impact of climate change on health, the contribution of healthcare to environmental damage, the concept of carbon hotspots and carbon footprinting, the principles of sustainable clinical practice and other ways health workers are influencing environmental policy and action.

Climate and health part 1: the impact of climate change on health

This first part in the three-part course on climate and health will introduce you to the range of impacts the crisis is having – and is increasingly predicted to have – on health, with a focus on women’s health. It will further describe the political commitments made to mitigate against its effects, and briefly discuss some of the barriers to change.

Climate and health part 2: the contribution of the healthcare sector to the climate and ecological emergency

This second part in the 3-part course on the climate and ecological emergency and women’s health will discuss the global and UK contribution to environmental damage, and the carbon reduction commitments made by the NHS. It will also introduce the concept of carbon hotspots (with a focus on obstetrics and gynaecology) and the various carbon footprinting approaches available.

Climate and health part 3: how health professionals can engage in climate mitigation and improve their services

This third part in the 3-part course on the climate and ecological emergency and women’s health will introduce the learner to the principles of sustainable clinical practice and how they can be applied by health workers within quality improvement methodology. It will also discuss some of the other ways health workers are influencing environmental policy and action, to include political advocacy and activism.
