This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.

This course covers the management of pregnancy in obese women and the specific challenges it poses. The course aims to enhance your knowledge of the risks in pregnancy and labour for both the mother and the baby in relation to obesity. On completion of this tutorial you should be able to provide specific information to an obese woman regarding her birth plan.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to

  • classify obesity and outline possible interventions prior to conception
  • discuss maternal complications related to obesity in pregnancy
  • summarise the specific risks that obesity poses to intrapartum care
  • outline the risks to the fetus, both antenatally and intrapartum
  • outline a management plan for women with obesity in pregnancy and during labour and delivery
  • tailor the antenatal management plan for a patient with previous bariatric surgery.
