This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.

We are all familiar with the concept of assessment, as each stage of a medical career is marked by successful completion of examinations and logbook sign-offs.

Assessments are likely to play an increasing role in continuing professional development and revalidation in the future, meaning that clinicians are likely to be assessed more regularly. Clinicians also regularly take on the role of assessor, in both formal and informal settings and for undergraduate and postgraduate learners, and so should have a broader understanding of the principles of assessment.

Effective, valid and reliable approaches to assessment are therefore required to measure knowledge, skills and attitudes.

This course describes different approaches to assessment, the limitations of various assessment tools and considers what makes an assessment effective.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • summarise the principles of assessment
  • describe recent trends in assessment
  • recognise and understand the changes in workplace-based assessment
  • describe approaches to assessment
  • recognise the limitations of assessment tools
  • explain the concept of standard setting within assessment
  • summarise how the quality of assessment tools are measured in terms of validity and reliability.
