This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.

This course provides an introduction and overview of the principles of supportive and palliative care, including best practice for caring for people in the last days of their life. In obstetrics and gynaecology, these principles will be needed to provide care and management for:

  • women experiencing symptoms or psychological / social / spiritual distress as a result of gynaecological malignancy or treatment complications
  • women presenting with late stage disease who are not eligible or do not want to receive disease modifying treatment
  • women who have relapsed or recurrent disease when treatment options are exhausted or now declined.

The course consists of a preliminary assessment and recommended reading, three case examples for you to work through, and a final assessment with further reading and resources. It is not intended to be a comprehensive guide but to signpost key areas for further study.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • create an individualised emergency care and treatment plan for someone with irreversible disease as part of advanced care planning
  • recognise common symptoms (disease related / complications of surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy) in gynaecological malignancy and describe how to initiate appropriate investigations / treatment for symptom control
  • discuss psychological, social and spiritual concerns with women
  • list who to involve in care from community services and volunteer networks and know when to seek specialist palliative care advice
  • describe best practice for caring for people in the last days of life, including anticipatory prescribing of appropriate medications.
