Welcome to this Special Interest Training course on Pelvic inflammatory disease.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • provide an overview of PID and consider the aetiology and pathophysiology of PID in order to completely understand the long-term sequelae of the disease
  • clinically assess women presenting with symptoms suggestive of acute PID and the investigations that would support the diagnosis
  • discuss the findings seen on various imaging modalities and decide whether they can be beneficial to diagnosis
  • manage PID with an emphasis on when laparoscopy is indicated and when operative interventions may be required
  • counsel women and their partners about PID, the importance of treatment compliance and the long-term complications that may arise
  • provide guidance on a sensitive approach to contact tracing and referral to the sexual health clinic for full screening
  • understand the follow-up and future planning in women treated as outpatients and those with severe disease.
