This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.

The menopause marks the end of a continuum of declining ovarian function and ushers in the ageing process. The transition from the reproductive years through perimenopause and menopause is a complex endocrine process, which can be summarised simplistically as estrogen deficiency state. A woman facing this transition is frequently challenged by physical and emotional changes that affect her quality of life and interfere with family, work and social life. These physical and emotional changes can pose greater challenges for a woman when other health problems arise due to ageing, coupled with an unhealthy lifestyle.

The life expectancy of women has been increasing over the past 150 years and while menarche is attained earlier, the age at menopause remains unchanged. Increasing longevity means that women today can expect to spend nearly 40% of their lifespan (over 30 years) post menopause. Postmenopausal women account for over 25% of the UK female population.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • understand the pathophysiology of menopause and its long-term consequences
  • counsel about the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • discuss alternatives to HRT
  • understand risk factors for osteoporosis and initiate preventative measures to reduce post-menopausal bone loss.
