This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.

The incidence of multiple pregnancy has increased with the advent of assisted reproductive techniques. Multiple pregnancy is a high-risk situation requiring specialised antenatal and intrapartum care. Perinatal mortality in twins is five times higher than for singletons and specific intrapartum problems may occur that need to be managed with appropriate knowledge and skill. Knowledge of the potential intrapartum complications of multiple pregnancy and their management is therefore essential in counselling patients regarding mode of delivery.

This course discusses intrapartum management of twin pregnancy, and complements the Multiple pregnancy course in the Antenatal Care module.

When you have completed this course you will be able to:

  • be familiar with the indications for vaginal delivery and caesarean section
  • be able to appropriately counsel a woman with multiple pregnancy regarding the mode of delivery
  • be familiar with the techniques of operative vaginal delivery appropriate to twin deliveries
  • be familiar with the complications and the techniques to manage vaginal twin delivery.
