Welcome to this Making Abortion Safe course on International and regional human rights frameworks.
International and regional human rights frameworks have set out core principles in fulfilling, protecting and respecting women’s rights related to access to safe abortion and post-abortion care. Women and girls’ ability to determine and make decisions about their own sexual and reproductive health, and have access to all relevant services, is critical for ensuring their human rights.
This course will introduce some of the key human rights principles in relation to safe abortion and post-abortion care. It contains tools to assess your country’s commitments towards these human rights principles, and ways for healthcare professionals to engage with international and regional treaty monitoring processes to advance country-level compliance with human rights commitments.
When you have completed this course you will be able to:
- describe the international and regional policy and human rights framework in relation to abortion
- find out if your country is party to any of the international framework and relate this to the policy and legal environment in your country
- understand the treaty monitoring system and how to use it to advocate for increased access to safe abortion nationally.
