This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.

Breaking bad news is an integral part of a doctor's role. Doing this sensitively and showing empathy is an important skill and can have lasting effects on the recipient, positive or otherwise. Doing it badly makes a difficult situation worse; doing it well can not make the situation better, but it avoids the recipient being left with additional painful memories.

Welcome to this Core Knowledge course on Early pregnancy loss - breaking bad news.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • become more aware of how to deal with women's reactions
  • learn about different ways of breaking bad news
  • become familiar with the problems that you may face as the bearer of bad news
  • become aware of how to deal with the reactions of the woman's support person.
