This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.

Diabetes is the most common pre-existing medical disorder seen in pregnancy. and gestational diabetes is the most common complication in pregnancy, affecting 10-20% of pregnancies. This course aims to cover these 3 forms of diabetes; their pathophysiology, risk factors, complications and management; and signpost you to key documents to support your clinical decision making.

This course also outlines the physiological changes to the maternal pituitary, adrenal and thyroid hormones in pregnancy. The aim is to provide information on the characteristics, management options and fetal and maternal hazards for the most common causes of pituitary, adrenal and thyroid dysfunction.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • type 1 and type 2 pre-existing diabetes and gestational diabetes
  • how to care for women with diabetes in the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum periods
  • the physiological changes to maternal pituitary hormones in pregnancy
  • prolactinoma, hypopituitarism, acromegaly, Cushing syndrome and diabetes insipidus in pregnancy
  • the physiological changes to maternal adrenal hormones in pregnancy
  • Addison's disease, acute adrenal failure, congenital adrenal hyperplasia and pheochromocytoma in pregnancy
  • the physiological changes to maternal and fetal thyroid hormones in pregnancy
  • the maternal and fetal risks associated with thyroid disorders in pregnancy
  • the assessment, antibodies and therapy for thyroid dysfunction in pregnancy.
