This course is part of the RCOG Core Knowledge series.

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are frequently reported by women and are a common reason for referral to gynaecology clinics. LUTS have a detrimental effect on quality of life and can affect women physically, psychologically and socially. Despite this, the prevalence and severity of the problem is often underestimated because it is an embarrassing problem for women to talk about.

This course helps you form a clear understanding of the prevalence, risk factors and pathophysiology of LUTS. It will also assist you in developing a systematic approach for assessing women with LUTS based on a thorough history, physical examination and a good understanding of both simple and more complex urogynaecological investigations.

When you have completed this course, you will be able to:

  • recognise and define LUTS
  • know the epidemiology and pathophysiology of LUTS
  • describe the impact of LUTS
  • take a thorough history and perform a physical examination relevant to urogynaecology
  • name the investigations available for LUTS and be able to interpret them
  • decide when to conduct certain investigations according to their limitations.
