A 38-year-old woman, para 1+7 (one miscarriage and six terminations) presented for IVF treatment having tried unsuccessfully for 4 years to achieve a pregnancy. She has regular periods with a cycle length of 28 days and nothing further in her gynaecological history, although fibroids had been diagnosed. She had also had three previous IVF cycles that had been unsuccessful. She had a caesarean section with the birth of her first child in 1995, and subsequent laparoscopies revealed blocked tubes. Her medical history was nil to note apart from a sickle cell trait.
