Hippocrates placed teaching before clinical care in his oath and the GMC has made involvement in teaching a key principle upon which good practice is founded.

While all doctors will be involved in all of these roles to some extent, they all make competitive demands on time. However, participation in teaching and training is just one of the professional roles required of a clinician. As well as clinical practice, other roles include auditor, researcher and manager.
Judgements need to be made by individual clinicians with respect to the emphasis that each of these roles has within their profession.
While all clinicians are expected to be involved in the provision of education to some extent within their clinical practice, others will develop skills in medical education and take on more responsibility in this area.
