NOTSS is about providing immediate feedback on non-technical skills with the aim of improving performance.
NOTSS is not about allocating blame, targeting poor performance or assigning a pass/fail grade.
- The use of NOTSS should be declared in advance
- The trainee needs to be directly observed
- It should be abandoned if the clinical situation is threatened in any way.
A labour ward session, or half- or full-day gynaecology operating list is ideal, but the NOTSS tool can be used for other scenarios if you wish.
Feedback should be given face-to-face and as soon as possible after the end of the session, and then documented on the trainee's ePortfolio.
The NOTSS forms are designed to be straightforward and should not take long to complete.
There are two forms – one is for obstetrics and one for gynaecology. The forms are available on the RCOG website, along with information booklets. The forms are also available on the training ePortfolio, with links to supporting information.
NOTSS can improve your practice!
As a trainer, you may wish to use a paper copy of the forms to make notes during the session, and then upload these to the ePortfolio later (or ask the trainee to do this bit).
