The labour ward is a place of multidisciplinary care delivery. Midwives, obstetricians and anaesthetists deliver immediate maternal care, with maternity support workers and theatre teams closely involved. Paediatrics/neonatal care is integral to labour ward work, for the babies with known problems, whose problems develop in labour or are revealed for the first time after birth. Input and support are frequently needed from blood bank/transfusion services, medical, surgical and radiology teams. Systems and procedures therefore need to be in place to facilitate the smooth working of these professional groups.
