Service user factors
Awareness of cancer symptoms are lower among women with the following factors:
- low socio-economic status
- less well-educated
- ethnic minorities
- those with a feeling of fear and embarrassment
- those with a feeling of not wishing to ‘disturb’ health professionals.
Professional factors
GPs more likely to refer women with:
- a higher socio-economic status (SES) earlier than those with a lower SES
- younger women with post-coital bleeding delay in referrals versus older women with post-menopausal bleeding.
- Poor communication can delay referral.
