Cognition is the process by which our brains gain information and understanding. In this section we will explore the different mechanisms the brain uses to process thoughts, senses and experiences.
Thought processes can be either conscious or automatic (unconscious).

- use working memory
- 5–9 facts
- the last resort method.
- fast and effortless
- highly practiced
Conscious control is required when:
- the task is critical, difficult or dangerous
- a habitual task needs overriding
- the task is new
- there is a need to prioritise competing tasks.
