- A variety of organisms can cause PID – including Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoea.
- Where PID is suspected treatment should be started immediately to reduce the risk of complications.
- Ectopic pregnancy and other causes of pelvic pain should be excluded.
- Mild/moderate cases can be treated with oral antibitoics.
- Severe cases require IV antibiotics.
- Appropriate partner tracing and contraceptive advice is vital.
