There is currently no proven effective treatment for congenital CMV. There have been trials looking at the efficacy of anti-viral treatments (e.g. ganciclovir) and CMV immunoglobulins. Currently though parents are left with the difficult choice of considering a termination of pregnancy if fetal infection if confirmed.
When maternal infection of CMV is confirmed it is recommended that the fetus is monitored with serial 3-4 weekly ultrasound scans.
There currently is no CMV vaccine licensed, though there is ongoing work on the development of one. It is important that good education and public awareness is improved to help try to reduce people contracting CMV but also to increase those with symptoms presenting for further testing.
