Mycoplasmas are small, membrane-bound (i.e., they lack a cell wall) free-living prokaryotes. They are the smallest organisms capable of independent replication.
Three types of mycoplasmas have been isolated from female genital mucosal surfaces:
- Mycoplasma genitalium
- Mycoplasma hominis
- Ureaplasma urealyticum.
